Open Dans 2010
For the second time the Rotterdam open dans festival provided space for international dancers to show their pieces and work in progress. Featuring a broad variety of contemporary dance the challange for me as a designer was to provide a visual framwork to communicate the festival's diversity, its dynamics and its demands for a contemporary and modern visual expression.

To communicate the several disciplines of dance and performance presented on the festival I chose for a set of three different flyers. Using a simple and moder iconography to communicate the subject of the festival I created diversity by displaying the 'dancer' in several typical potures. The varierity of colors supports the idea of diverity, additionally it creates a stimulus of 'recognition but still something new to discover' by the viewer.

Winkens Architekten is a Berlin based architecture office, it's
portfolio reaches from individual single family housing design to
commercial projects, public and cultural facilities and masterplaning.
An online portfolio presenting their projects via photography and drawings
was the best approach to represent the studio. Dealing with screen real estate regarding navigation
elements, text and images, I decided for a layered design where navigation elements and copy texts are overlaying
an interactive photo gallery. Providing the right amount of white space arround contained elements a clean, calm and organized appearance is being created.

Carnegie Foundation
The Andrew Carnegie Foundation asked for a redesign of their website. Beside the current site is based on very outdated techniques also their visual design required a face-lift to give the site a contemporary appeal.
On the one side the client demanded ability to update content by themselves, on the other site the amount and depth of content was quite narrow.
A custom designed page based on a modified wordpress framework was the optimal solution for this assignment. It provided all functionality required for the site and even non computer affected people are able to handel the editors interface.

Contact Zone Rotterdam
The demand of the client was to drive more participitiants to regular contact improvisation event.
The graphic design adapts the idea of merging bodies while providing clear information about the event.
The decision for a graphical illustrative solution was based on the idea to trigger attention by an abstract shape combined with a clear message to address curious people who had no idea about that matter before.
Posters and flyers are refering to a website which provides basic facts about the event. An extended version of the site is planned as the event is growing.

After Image performance
After image is a performance based on the after image effect. Being stimulated by very bright light impulses the receptors of the human eye create a frozen still image on the retina of things seen in the light. An optical illusion which I adapted for the flyer design.

Osowski Almeida Moeller Collective
In cooperation with the modern jazz band 'Osowski Almeida Moeller Collective and the
dancer Ola Maciejewska we performed a thirty minutes improvization
during the happenings@nai events. On three screens I provided a visual choreography for the musicians
who live composed an atmospheric soundtrack to the animations.
Parts of music faded over with parts of silence in which the dancer
interacted with the audience and the musicians, accompanied by dynamic typographic
fragments writing the Electronic Poems by Dr. Granate.

Mapping the City
Task for the exam was to explore the city of Rotterdam, revealing it's hidden layers and make them visible to the public. Choice of publication media was free. In my personal view, I see a city as a living organism formed by it's inhabitants and their daily life. Each inhabitant has a very own individual perception of ”his“ city. Maps are visual tools to communicate about inter-relations of items, objects or subjects in general. So on the one side my research focused on the history of mapping but also about individual perception of "reality". Reflecting my own perception of Rotterdam I drew my individual map of Rotterdam, forming a visual base to communicate with my co-inhabitants about my relation to this city.

Studio Uli Budde
Uli Budde asked to create a web site for his product design studio in Amsterdam,
a virtual showroom of his designed products, his projects and exhibitions. Letting the design speak for itself was an important request which concluded in the descision to create a
descent, and content carrying layout, driving the
focus to the products.
A further demand was to design the site in a way Uli could maintain
and update it's content independantly without further assistance
and without getting in touch with coding nor layouting. A content management system programmed by me in Flash
separates content from design and lets the client maintain
any content of the site, without interfering with code or layout.

Going spastic on Bleeps
Based on footage I took for a performance at NAI, I fragmented and
distorted sequences of a dancer playing around with surrounding furniture. The sequences are synced to music.
The combination of noisy and hectic sounds with a stacato of visual cuts and fragments create a dense, atmosphere filled with acid.

Four Seasons Real estate
An arabian real estate office asked for the design of a new company
logo. Researching about existing logos and branding in Dubai showed two
major results. On first hand, local business does not rely on western marketing
strategies, a sense for branding and brand recognition is not common. Second, companies run by western holdings are mainly applying western
cliches of 'oriental' expression to their branding. To make the company distinguishable from those floresque and calligraphic
branded competitors, I chose for a clear design by the following points:
·Emphasizing the meaning of the company's name by a color code for the four seasons.
·Pointing out the field of business by placing an iconographic skyline.
·Combining
a light antiqua typeface, with a black sans serif italic to join
the meaning of value and money a real estate agent is dealing with and the visualizing the dynamics
of a booming city.

Creative Taxis
Based on my studies in dynamic typography at the art academy and
being motivated by the results of my researches and experiments I
further developed a specific technique of type animation.
In this clip I synchronize written words to spoken text. The short
interlude by DJ Krush is about the connection of taxis in NY and
individual creativity.
The way how the words are moving over the screen visualizes the frequencies
spectrum of a human voice. The shaded yellowish appearance is related
to the content of the speech.

Gorgeous Image Consulting
Silje Ingstad just started up with her personal image consultancy
office, Gorgeous, in Barcelona as she asked for the design of a bilingual
web site.
Providing a range of services from personal shopping to image and
wedding consultancy it meant for the design of the site to create a flat but broad hierarchy
content wise. Communicating elegance and class, by a gray color scheme for the
site, with some rosé accents I animated quotes by famous stylists
and designers to introduce the several sub categories. The typeface
being used, again picks up the concept of class and elegance.

Holzfreunde
The project group Gesellschaft der Holzfreunde, which means 'Friends
of Wood Society', formed by young architects in Berlin asked for a
logo design which was suitable to be sprayed on furniture and walls
as well as being used on letter heads and fax paper.
The design included specific versions for each purpose of usage.

Office Originair
The Amsterdam joint venture of Uli Budde and Ivan Kaasner, officeoriginair,
needed a web site to give possible clients an insight of their work.
The site was demanded to be dynamic, so they are able to update and maintain
the site themselves without getting in touch with code or design
framework. Projects and products should be presented in interactive
image galleries. A news-section keeps the visitors up to date.

Blattner Communicate
Based on a design manual and wire frames of Anna Gaissmaier, I developed
a web site for the Zurich based communication consultant Susanne
Blattner.
To compromise the gap between the corporate house style of the company
and the technical restrictions of the web, the clientto create both,
a Flash site, keeping the house style and a pure html site to match
every user's system configuration.
